Science of Lewis and Clark displayed by future educators

The approximately 700 teachers attending the Washington Science Teachers’ Association annual conference Oct. 9-11 at Washington State University will have a chance to try all 82 different lesson plans for science education based on elements of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Each of those 82 lessons or individual learning centers were created by, and will be presented by, a future teacher enrolled in WSU’s teacher preparation program, explained Lynda Paznokas, Boeing Distinguished Professor of Science Education.

The 82 presentations link specific passages in the Lewis and Clark journals to a science lesson suitable for use in an elementary school classroom, Paznokas said.

By presenting their own lesson plans to the teachers at the conference, students learn not only how to prepare the lessons, but also how to attend, participate, and volunteer at a professional conference, she added.

The 82 science lessons from the WSU students will be presented on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 11 a.m. in the Compton Union Building’s Carey Ballroom.
