Washington State University Vancouver is hosting a public lecture Sept. 25, featuring educator and motivator Jaime Escalante as he presents “Ganas: Creating the Desire to Learn.” The 7 p.m. lecture is free and will be in the Student Services lecture hall and be followed by an audience discussion and refreshments. Seating is limited. Escalante’s genius for teaching became the subject of the book, “Escalante: The Best Teacher in America,” and the acclaimed film, “Stand and Deliver,” starring Edward James Olmos. Cecil Andrus, who served as U.S. interior secretary and four terms as Idaho governor, will deliver the annual Lane Family Lecture in Environmental Science at the Pullman campus on Sept. 25. His address, “Threatening Clouds Over Our Environment,” is set for 7:30 p.m. in Todd Hall Auditorium. Andrus is expected to discuss efforts by the Bush administration to allow oil development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and to alter cleanup plans for Hanford and the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory and give a brief historical overview of the Environmental Protection Agency. WSU will kick off its three-day Home Economics Centennial Reunion with a reception at 4 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 25, in the WSU Lewis Alumni Centre. The reunion celebrates 100 years of home economics education at the university. Friday’s program will include presentations on understanding the role of dolls and play in brain development; a showcase of department programs, research and future challenges; van tours of home economics facilities on campus. Greed and confidence: Last week’s resignation by New York Stock Exchange Chairman Richard Grasso, as the result of public outcry over his $140 million compensation package, has again focused attention on issues of executive pay and corporate governance. John R. Nofsinger, assistant professor of finance in the College of Business and Economics at WSU, is the co-author of the 2003 book “Infectious Greed: Restoring Confidence in America’s Companies,” which calls for realigning incentives in the corporate arena to promote desirable behavior, deter unethical actions and establish proper relationships among executives, investors and monitors, such as auditors, lawyers and credit rating agencies.
