Sue Hinz retires from News Services

Sue Hinz retired from the position of interim director at Washington State University News Services, effective June 30.

Hinz worked for WSU in University Relations for more than 28 years, publishing the university’s faculty and staff publication. She served as interim director for WSU News Services, formerly WSU News Bureau, for the past two years.

She will continue to work at News Services, on a part-time basis, this fall until the position of assistant director is filled. In addition, Hinz will teach one evening public relations course at WSU’s Murrow School of Communication. She also has a teaching appointment with the School of Journalism and Mass Media at the University of Idaho.

“I always enjoyed teaching,” Hinz said, “and this new period of my life is exciting because I will have more time to teach.”

Hinz, who holds journalism and education degrees from WSU, worked for the first time at the university when she was still a student. “I was a member of the News Bureau staff during the time of student unrest in the spring of 1970,” she said.

Throughout her life, Hinz has been an active member of WSU and the community. She has served in several leadership roles, including the presidency of the Pullman Chamber of Commerce. She is currently in her second term on the Pullman City Council.

From her years working at WSU, Hinz highlights how the university has undergone a constant improvement of facilities. “The Pullman campus has seen a continuous change over the last 30 years. There has not been a time when a crane was not at work,” she said.

“The new facilities have provided WSU faculty with the physical space to do their research and teaching, and that has allowed a growing faculty body to show their talents in more ways.”
