PULLMAN, Wash. — The Department of University Recreation at Washington State University received recognition and several awards at the 2003 National Intramural-Recreational Sports Associations (NIRSA) national conference held recently in Cleveland, Ohio.
The NIRSA Award of Merit for Region VI went to Kathleen Hatch, director of University Recreation, for her outstanding contributions to the organization and the field of recreational sports during the past year. Region VI includes Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, Utah, Arizona, Alaska, Hawaii, British Columbia, Japan and Guam.
University Recreation also received two NIRSA Creative Excellence Awards in marketing. In the category of New Media, a first place award went to the University Recreation Web site. Also, the first edition of the University Recreation Programs and Services Guide, published Fall 2003 by WSU’s Office of Printing and Publication, received a third place award in the category of Comprehensive Publication.
Three University Recreation student employees were also recognized at the conference for their academic achievement while employed by a recreational sports department. The William N. Wasson Award was presented to WSU undergraduates Tara Wyman and Caryn Young and graduate student Karee Boone.
