PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University’s Sextet received a third-place award at the 2003 Music Teachers National Association Collegiate Chamber Music Competition in Salt Lake City last week.
“Our group was certainly among major league players at the national level,” said James Schoepflin, director of WSU’s School of Music and Theatre Arts.
Members of the WSU sextet have been playing together only a few months but competed in and won state and regional competitions, earning them the right to compete at the national level.
“Any award at these national levels constitutes a confirmation of the excellence that WSU students continue to achieve,” Schoepflin said.
A characteristic unique to WSU’s group is that only half the members — Sofia Tegart, flute; Sarah Wilson, clarinet; and Mary Doornink, piano — are music majors. Group member Jonathan Kirk, french horn, is a bioengineering major. Adam Zahand, bassoon, is a genetics and cell biology major, while Sara Blake, oboe, is a second-year veterinary student who received a bachelor’s degree last summer in animal science.
