VANCOUVER, Wash. — New gallery shows at Washington State University Vancouver feature works by Claudia Mederos and April Kiessling.
The Student Services Building gallery houses a collection of paintings by Claudia Mederos focusing on living in the information age. Mederos describes “Paintings-Small Works on Paper” as pieces that are her reaction to years of working as a graphic designer with computer-generated imagery and text. The pieces are non-uniform and have dreamlike, other- world qualities.
The Engineering Life Sciences Building gallery houses a collection of acrylic portraits, landscapes and mixed media pieces by April Kiessling. The portraits show the likeness of individuals, but through discreet details and the use of color, reveal personal characteristics about them. Kiessling notes, “I strive for a likeness, but even more, I strive to say something unique and personal, and perhaps even revelatory about the sitter.” In addition to the portraits, a selection of pieces assembled shortly after 9/11 are included in the exhibit. The artwork reflects Kiessling’s considerations of unity, isolation and cohesion in times of tragedy. The opening reception for Kiessling’s exhibit is Friday, February 28, at 5:30 p.m.
