Author/poet begins series

Al Young, an award-winning author, poet and musician recognized for his culturally diverse subjects of thought, is a featured speaker in the Department of Comparative American Cultures 2002 – 03 lectures series. “An Evening with Al Young” is set for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, in the Fine Arts auditorium.

For more than a decade, Young has lectured widely across the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, Asia and the Middle East. He speaks on topics ranging from American music and literary culture, African-American arts, emerging global literature and music, and creativity and human survival.

His work has been translated into a dozen languages, and he often breaks into song while lecturing and reading poetry. He has film-scripted for Sidney Poitier, Bill Cosby and Richard Pryor.

The lecture is sponsored by the departments of Comparative American Cultures, English, and Women’s Studies; the American Studies Program; the College of Liberal Arts; and the Office of Human Relations and Diversity.
