Visiting artist explores bodies and landscapes

Is there a relationship between a hillside and a shoulder? Spokane artist Mary Farrell will explore how the processes of drawing uncover analogies between the human figure and the landscape in this season#s first Visiting Artist Program presentation presented by the fine arts department at Washington State University.

The lecture will be presented Thursday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium on the Pullman campus.

For Farrell, marks describe both topography and the dimensional mapping of the figure. Gestural and alive, her work maintains a strong sense of freedom, while acting as a record of discovery through the layering of materials in time.

Mary Farrell has taught printmaking and drawing at Gonzaga University, Spokane, for the last six years. Most recently she has been featured in Drawn to the Wall at the Jundt Museum, Spokane, The Lorinda Knight Gallery, Spokane, and the Art Spirit Gallery in Coeur d#Alene. She was also a recipient of the 2000 Artist Trust Fellowship.
