Cheryl Bachelder, president and chief concept officer of the KFC Corp., will present “You Gotta Be a Maniac! Success Criteria for the Hospitality Industry,” as the fall 2002 Burtenshaw Lecturer, 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, in room 203 of the Smith Center for Undergraduate Education.
Bachelder is the 43rd top executive to present insights into the hospitality industry at the Burtenshaw Lecture Series since it began in 1981. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Bachelder joined KFC in January 2001. She previously served as an executive vice president at Domino’s Pizza, LLC, where she was responsible for planning, marketing, research, product development, and concept development. She has been credited with turning around the Domino’s brand and growing same-store sales at a four-percent rate from 1996-2000. She also served in senior general management positions at RJR Nabisco, and brand management positions at Gillette and Procter & Gamble.
KFC, based in Louisville, Ky., has specialized in family meals of chicken and home-style side dishes since its founding in 1952 by Col. Harland Sanders. KFC is the market leader in chicken, and its success plan was recently featured in Chain Leader magazine’s January 2002 edition. The lecture series is sponsored by DeVere Jerry and Angelina Burtenshaw, and honors the memory of their son, Calvin. Hosting the program is the School of Hospitality Business Management (formerly Hotel and Restaurant Administration) in the WSU College of Business and Economics.
Jerry Burtenshaw is chairman of ABC Services, a Bellevue company that specializes in food services, facility management, maintenance, design, consulting, and support. His contributions to WSU, the hospitality industry, and higher education are numerous, and in 1982, WSU awarded him its Alumni Achievement Award. In 1992, he was inducted into the College of Diplomates by the Educational Foundation of the National Restaurant Association, and is an honorary member of the NRA board of directors. A two-term president of the Restaurant Association of the State of Washington and an active member of the RASW’s executive committee, he was selected as Hospitality Man of the Year in 1980.
The Burtenshaws support of the WSU hospitality program has spanned more than two decades. In addition to the lecture series, they also created, in their son’s memory, the Calvin Brett Burtenshaw Memorial Scholarship. It provides support for many students who plan to study hospitality business management at WSU. Jerry Burtenshaw is a founding member of the school’s advisory board.
