WSU Student Wins National Photography Award

PULLMAN, Wash. — A Washington State University student received top honors in the national Society of Professional Journalists competition for college journalists in Fort Worth, Texas, Sept. 14.

Kevin German, a 1998 graduate of Port Angeles High School, won first place in spot-news photography for his photograph that captured two women’s emotional finish at a cancer relay race. The picture was published in the Seattle Times in summer 2001. He also was a finalist in the photo illustration category, and last year, won first place in feature photography.

German, a senior majoring in communication, provides photographs for The Spokesman-Review and Associated Press. He also takes portraits for WSU’s Chinook yearbook and trains photographers at Student Publications – all in addition to his full class load.

He is the son of Kelly and Roger German of Port Angeles.
