PULLMAN, Wash. — Eighteen Washington and Idaho high school students interested in medical careers attended an enrichment program at Washington State University and the University of Idaho this summer.
The six-week program, called U-DOC, permits students to explore medical and health careers and prepare for their college experience. According to program director Mary Sanchez Lanier, U-DOC encourages participation by underrepresented minorities, rural, first generation and economically disadvantaged students. “Aspiring to be a physician does not always result in becoming a physician,” said Sanchez Lanier. “A successful college experience is essential for students who wish to pursue a medical education.”
U-DOC program participants received an introduction to various health professions and the curriculum required to enter them. They learned CPR, First Aid and other basic medical procedures from health care professionals at hospitals and clinics in Pullman and Spokane, and Moscow, Idaho. Participants also visited Eastern State Hospital in Medical Lake and a pathology lab in Spokane. Exercises designed to improve their study, test-taking, writing, presentation skills and computer literacy were presented.
The U-DOC program originated at the University of Washington in 1993 and is funded by a grant from the Health Careers Opportunity Program in the Health Resources and Services Administration. It is sponsored by the UW Minority Affairs Program, the WWAMI (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho) at the UI and WSU. This year it ran June 16 to July 26.

Lapwai: Angele M. Smith, a 2002 graduate of Lapwai High School, is the daughter of Elena and Hilliard Smith of Lapwai.
Meridian: Jeanie M. Levinski will graduate from Meridian High School in 2003 and is the daughter of Lois and John Levinski of Meridian.
Nampa: Nicole B. Riggs will graduate from Skyview High School in 2003 and is the daughter of Karen Riggs of Nampa and Steven Riggs of Young Ward, Utah.
Notus: Mary B. Acosta, a 2002 graduate of Notus High School, is the daughter of Karla Anderson of Notus and Manuel Acosta of Burbank, Wash.
Parma: Sharon T. Wong, a 2002 graduate of Parma High School, is the daughter of April and Terry Wong of Parma.
St. Maries: Allison N. Petrie will graduate from St. Maries High School in 2003 and is the daughter of Annette and Patrick Petrie of St. Maries.
Twin Falls: Corey R. White will graduate from Twin Falls High School in 2003 and is the son of Marilyn and Todd White of Twin Falls.
