PULLMAN, Wash. — A cancer researcher and professor of pathology and biochemistry will be the Burroughs Wellcome Visiting Professor at Washington State University March 26 – 29.
The professor, Lawrence A. Loeb, will deliver a public lecture, “The Single Greatest Killer: Tobacco,” at 7 p.m. on March 27 in the Samuel H. Smith Center for Undergraduate Education room 203. A reception will follow the lecture.
He also will present a research seminar, “A Mutator Phenotype and Cancer,” at 4:10 p.m. on March 28 in Todd 130. The seminar addresses Loeb’s hypothesis that cancer is manifested by a mutator phenotype.
Loeb is the director of the Joseph Gottstein Memorial Cancer Research Laboratory at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He also is a professor in the departments of pathology and biochemistry.
Loeb received his doctoral degree from University of California at Berkley and attended New York University –Bellevue Medical School. He is the former president of the American Association for Cancer Research and is the president elect of the Environmental Mutagen Society.
The Burroughs Wellcome Visiting Professorship in Basic Biomedical Sciences is administered by the Federation of American Scientists for Experimental Biology. The purpose of the visiting professorship is to stimulate interest in basic sciences and enhance communication between scientists.
