PULLMAN, Wash. — The National Academies Division on Earth and Life Studies has invited Washington State University professor of sociology Eugene A. Rosa to serve as a member of the Board on Radioactive Waste Management.
The board promotes public, worker and environmental protection through management of radioactive and hazardous waste. It provides a forum for discussion and conducts studies on national and international waste management issues.
Rosa is an internationally recognized authority on environmental risks, human ecology, and environmental sociology, among other fields. His research has focused on environmental topics, particularly energy, technology and risk issues. Rosa has investigated the relationship between levels of energy consumption and societal well-being, public opinion about energy problems and policies, factors affecting the adoption of solar technologies and conservation practices, and public attitudes toward and acceptance of nuclear power and nuclear policies. Gov. Booth Gardner twice appointed Rosa to the Washington State Nuclear Waste Advisory Council.
Rosa came to WSU in 1978 after completing undergraduate studies at The Rochester Institute of Technology (1967), graduate studies at the Maxwell School of Syracuse University (1976) and postdoctoral studies at Stanford University. He serves as the Edward R. Meyer Distinguished Professorship of Environmental and Natural Resources Policy in the Thomas S. Foley Institute for Public Policy and Service at WSU.
Rosa’s appointment ends December 2004.
