WSU Spokane Design Students Assess Revitalizing Four-Block Area Downtown

SPOKANE, Wash. — Washington State University Spokane design students will present their findings on revitalizing a four-block area in downtown Spokane from 1:15-4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the Center for Justice, 35 W. Main.

Bob Scarfo’s interdisciplinary design studio students took on the project, Urban Centers that Support Health Across Generations, at the beginning of this semester. The students have assessed the viability of advancing a holistic development strategy for downtown that takes advantage of Spokane’s urban core and focuses on meeting the needs and amenities related to an aging population.

Even though this is not a new idea, it is the first time the project is being studied with the intention of applying the work as an interrelated whole to make up an urban center, noted Scarfo, WSU Spokane Interdisciplinary Design Institute associate professor and graduate coordinator.

The Interdisciplinary Design Institute at Washington State University Spokane advances knowledge to enhance the quality of people’s lives in the built and natural environment through interdisciplinary instruction, research, and community service in design and construction.
