Toucans Steel Drum Band Comes to WSU July 11

PULLMAN, Wash. — The Toucans Steel Drum Band will give two free concerts Wednesday, July 11, as part of the summer Music on the Mall series presented by Washington State University’s Office of Student Programs.

The first performance will take place from noon-1 p.m. on Glenn Terrell Mall. The second performance is set for 5:30 p.m. at Reaney Park as part of the community barbecue series. The CUB food service will sell food at both performances.

The Seattle-based Toucans is a dynamic four-piece steel band that promises to get bodies moving and minds soaring with its high-energy rhythms and eclectic sound. The Toucans have been performing since 1988 and have produced seven albums.

The band is famous for playing the steel drum, a unique instrument that was invented some 50 years ago. This instrument is made of a 55-gallon oil drum that has been hammered and tuned to produce tones. The drum carries the full chromatic range of notes and can make almost any type of music.
