PULLMAN, Wash. — Warwick M. Bayly has been named permanent dean of Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.
Bayly succeeded the previous interim dean, Terry McElwain, in January 2000. McElwain was interim dean since Dean Emeritus Borje Gustafsson retired in 1998.
Bayly, 49, has been at WSU for more than 20 years and was the named the first, four-year Robert B. McEachern Distinguished Professor in Equine Medicine in 1995. He also has served as the college’s associate dean for continuing education and interim chair of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences.
“There was near unanimous support for Dr. Bayly’s appointment among the faculty and staff of WSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine,” said Provost Ron Hopkins. “Dr. Bayly has done a remarkable job during his tenure as interim dean.”
Dean searches for veterinary colleges have been hampered nationwide by a lack of qualified applicants who choose to pursue an academic administrative career vs. more lucrative careers in other sectors of veterinary medicine. Two previous searches for a WSU veterinary dean conducted since 1998 were unsuccessful due in large part to the recent trend. Hopkins explained that WSU central and veterinary college administrators believed there was no reason to initiate another search.
“He’s enthusiastic, a solid administrator, and has a strong background and experience in both research and academics,” said Hopkins. “We are certain his leadership of the college will continue to advance WSU’s place among other world-class institutions. With his knowledge and experience, he could easily leave academia and virtually name his price elsewhere in veterinary medicine. We are fortunate he’s chosen to guide the nation’s finest veterinary program at WSU.”
Originally from Melbourne, Australia, Bayly earned his veterinary degree from Melbourne University in 1974. He served residencies in equine medicine and surgery at both Texas A&M and Ohio State universities. While at Ohio State, he also earned a master’s degree in 1979 before coming to WSU. He was board certified in large-animal internal medicine in 1987. In 1999, Bayly was awarded a doctorate from the University of Liege in Belgium. A past president of the Washington State Veterinary Medical Association, Bayly is president of the World Equine Veterinary Association.
