SPOKANE, Wash. — Exceptional ninth- and 10th-graders from Spokane schools will show off their brainpower and science projects at the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement Science Competition on March 27-28. The Spokane MESA program is sponsored by Washington State University Spokane.

Agilent Technologies and Avista Corp. are competition co-sponsors. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Agilent Technologies, 24001 E. Mission in Liberty Lake.

MESA is designed to increase African-American, Hispanic, American Indian and women students in mathematics, engineering and science careers by providing educational enrichment and activities for students in grades 7-12. SAT workshops, field trips, speakers, competitions and classroom enrichment activities prepare students for university-level studies in various science- and technology-related fields.

High schools participating in the competition include Ferris, Lewis and Clark, North Central, Rogers and Shadle Park. About 300-400 students are involved in Spokane MESA each year.

For more information, contact Terrie Scott, Spokane MESA director, 509/358-7966, spokaneMESA@wsu.edu, or Aida Fraser-Hammer, high school program coordinator, 509/358-7968.
