SUNNYSIDE, Wash. — Washington State University Tri-Cities’ Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement Program and Sunnyside schools will host the annual MESA Student Conference Saturday, Feb. 17. WSU faculty and other business and industry role models will share 20 career workshops with more than 200 6th-8th grade students from Pomeroy to Yakima. Parent workshops also are scheduled in both English and Spanish.
The event is scheduled from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at Sunnyside High School. Preregistration is required, and attendance is limited to 225 students.
Kirk Reinkens, director of the Yakima Valley/Tri-Cities MESA Program, and Ruben Carrera, assistant superintendent of Sunnyside schools, will serve as masters of ceremonies. Schools from throughout the region have received announcements for the event.
“We’re very excited to have our fantastic team of presenters back for another year, as well as the addition of the Pacific Science Center’s Math Blast program for the kickoff of the event,” said Reinkens. “Without these eye-opening experiences, many students would not be aware of the opportunities that exist for them when they excel in mathematics and science.”
Both student and parent workshops will engage participants in hands-on activities to broaden their experiences and familiarity with mathematics- and science-based careers.
MESA brings together resources and support for underrepresented students in grades 6-12. Corporate support comes from Battelle, Fluor Hanford Inc., Salomon Smith Barney, Bechtel Hanford Inc. and CH2M HILL Hanford Group
