PULLMAN, Wash. — Textile and collage artist Joan Schulze will present a lecture, “Sources of Inspiration,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, in the Fine Arts Center at the Pullman campus, followed by a reception and book signing from 8-9 p.m. The lecture is in conjunction with the WSU Museum of Art’s exhibition, “The Thread That Binds: Marita Dingus, Mar Goman, and Joan Schulze.”
Schulze is an internationally recognized artist from San Francisco who uses textile and fiber techniques to create unique art forms, addressing the influences of pop art, feminism, folk art and formalism. Schulze has lectured at art centers, universities and museums in Australia, Canada, Japan, Europe and throughout the United States since 1974.
In her lecture, Schulze will discuss how images captured during her travels throughout the United States and around the world have influenced her mixed-media textiles and collages. Schulze will talk about where she gets her inspiration by showing slides and explaining the motivation behind capturing these images and how they relate to her work.
While at WSU, Schulze will also demonstrate her techniques in a workshop for WSU fine arts students and faculty on Friday, Jan. 26. The workshop will be scheduled according to the availability of interested fine arts students and faculty.
In addition, Schulze will present an adult community workshop, “Thinking Small, Creating Beauty, and Exploring Possibilities,” on Saturday, Jan. 27. The collage and monoprint workshop will introduce several mixed-media processes including ways to use the photocopy machine to print directly onto fabric.
The exhibition runs through Feb. 4 at the Museum of Art in the Fine Arts Center.
The WSU Museum of Art is open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 1-5 p.m. The museum will be closed Jan. 15 and March 17-25 (open by appointment March 19-23) and at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 29.
All events are free and open to the public. The gallery is wheelchair accessible. Parking permits for weekday visitors may be purchased at the Cougar Depot at Davis Way (Hwy 270) and State Street, or at WSU Parking Services on Wilson Road, directly uphill from the Fine Arts Center. On weekday evenings, parking is available in the Fine Arts parking structure, off Stadium Way at Grimes Way, for an hourly fee. Weekend parking is free.
