PULLMAN, Wash. — Paul G. Richards, a Columbia University faculty member with its Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, will discuss “Earth’s Inner Core: Discoveries and Conjectures” on Thursday, Sept. 21, during a talk on the Washington State University campus.
The 7:30-9 p.m. program is planned for Todd Hall, Room 276 and is open to the public without charge.
Richards’ research focuses on the theory of seismic wave propagation as well as the use of seismological methods to study underground nuclear explosions and the implications in both the scientific and political worlds. In 1994, he was a member of the U.S. delegation to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, negotiating a comprehensive test ban treaty.
He is a fellow of the AAAS and the American Geophysical Union, as well as a member of the Royal Astronomical Society.
The address is part of Phi Beta Kappa’s Visiting Scholar series. The WSU Program in Environmental Science and Regional Planning is cosponsoring Richards’ two-day visit.
On Sept. 22, he will join the WSU Ethics Study Committee for a noon luncheon at the Koinonia House. During the day, Richards also will meet with ESRP and geology students.
