Lecture Series on 1890’s Set Sept. 18-22 at WSU

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University faculty members will discuss the world of the 1890s in a series of lectures open to the public Sept. 18-22.

The series, called Thompson Topics, will celebrate the rededication of Thompson Hall on the WSU campus. Faculty from the history, foreign languages and architecture departments will focus on topics ranging from women in the 1890s to a look at Thompson Hall through the 20th century.

The programs are planned as follows:

Monday, Sept. 18

–“Women in the Era of ‘Progress, Glory and Electricity,’” Bonnie Frederick, CUB B11-15, noon.

–“Thompson Hall: The Architecture of Noble Ideals,” Henry Matthews, Thompson 201, 4:30 p.m.

Tuesday, Sept. 19

–“Confucianism, Feminism and Imperialism in 1890s China,” Thomas Kennedy, CUB B11-15, noon.

–“The Dawn of the Pacific Century,” Noriko Kawamura, Thompson 201, 4:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 20

–“Catholicism, Marxism and the Popularization of Piety in Imperial Germany,” Raymond Sun, CUB B11-15, noon.

–“La Belle Epoque,” Elwood Hartman, Thompson 201, 4:30 p.m.

–“Thompson Hall Through the Century,” Birgitta Ingemanson, Thompson 201, 7 p.m.

Thursday, Sept. 21

–“The Inland Empire Comes of Age,” Janice Rutherford, CUB B11-15, noon.

Friday, September 22

–“The Modern Break Through,” Kim Andersen, CUB B11-15, noon.

–“Thompson Hall Through the Prism of Time,” David Stratton, Thompson 201, 4:30 p.m.
