PULLMAN, Wash. — Barbara A. Couture, dean of Washington State
University’s College of Liberal Arts, is one of two winners of the 2000
Conference on College Composition and Communication Outstanding Book
Award.
Couture earned the recognition for her book “Toward a Phenomenological
Rhetoric: Writing, Profession, and Altruism.” The award, now in its tenth year,
is presented to author(s) or editor(s) of a book that makes outstanding
contributions to composition and communication studies.
“I am extremely pleased to be honored by my colleagues across the nation in
this way,” said Couture, who began her administrative duties at WSU in 1998.
“It was a pleasure for me to write a book that connects contemporary
philosophy with our concerns to move toward a better society through writing
and speaking with one another.”
The presentation was made during the 2000 CCCC annual convention held in
Minneapolis.
The CCCC is a constituent group for college teachers of writing within the
National Council of Teachers of English. NCTE is dedicated to improving the
teaching and learning of English and the language arts at all levels of
education.
Couture’s other books include “Professional Writing: Toward a College
Curriculum,” published in 1987; and “Cases for Technical and Professional
Writing,” co-authored with Jone Rymer in 1985, which won the NCTE
Excellence in Technical and Scientific Communication Award for Best Book.
Also winning the CCCC book award was Susan Miller of the University of
Utah.
