PULLMAN, Wash. — Beginning this fall, dependents of Washington State University faculty and staff may be eligible for a $1,000 privately funded scholarship for 2000-01, renewable for a second year.
Greg Sheridan, associate vice president for university advancement, said the WSU Foundation would like to recognize the outstanding contributions WSU employees make to the university. “The scholarship fund has been established to provide their dependents an opportunity to pursue their educational dreams with some financial assistance,” Sheridan said.
An annual maximum award of $1,000 will be made for full-time, enrolled undergraduate students with a renewable feature for a second year if the student recipient has made satisfactory progress towards a degree and achieved a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above at WSU. The scholarships can be used on any of the WSU campuses. Currently enrolled WSU students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above to qualify.
“The program will allow the university to remain competitive with its peer institutions,” Sheridan said.
A number of universities offer tuition scholarships to children of their faculty and staff. Colorado State University provides a 25 percent tuition discount, while the University of Illinois provides a 50 percent tuition discount. Cornell University offers a 30 percent tuition discount; Michigan State University provides a 50 percent tuition discount for dependents of employees with five or more service years.
Mississippi State University and the University of Tennessee offer 50 percent tuition discounts, while Ohio State University provides a 50 percent tuition discount for dependents of employees who have at least three service years.
Those eligible must have graduated from a high school and meet university admissions requirements. Each student must complete a scholarship application and be enrolled full time.
Applications must be made on the WSU Application for Academic Scholarships form at Scholarship Services, Lighty Student Services Building, Room 380. Employees’ dependents will be eligible for the program as long as they are pursuing an undergraduate degree and have not exceeded age 25. Spouses of employees are not eligible.
