EVERETT, Wash. — Washington State University President Emeritus Sam
Smith was honored here last week by Snohomish County.
During a Snohomish County Cougar Pride evening gala June 14 in the Monte
Cristo Hotel, Smith was honored with a proclamation from Robert J. Drewel,
county executive, declaring it “Dr. Sam Smith Day.”
A framed and signed proclamation was presented to Smith, who served as
WSU’s eighth president from 1985-2000, by WSU graduate Gary Nelson, a
county council member.
The proclamation lauds Smith’s achievements in raising Washington State
University’s reputation as one of the top universities in the nation. Also cited
is his leadership establishing the Extended Degree Program, which has
provided opportunities to more than 1,000 students in all counties of
Washington, 45 states and 15 foreign countries.
Smith’s achievements in raising more than $275 million for student
scholarships, as well as teaching and research that have garnered national
recognition, were also praised.
