PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University is listed in The Hispanic
Outlook in Higher Education “Top 100” national list of institutions granting
doctoral academic degrees to Chicano/Latino students.
According to the May 5 issue of the Paramus, N.J, published journal and its
Web site (www.hispanicoutlook.com/top100.html), WSU is 49th out of the 100.
The journal used data from the 1997-98 fiscal year to compile its ranking.
According to the list, WSU granted eight doctoral degrees to Chicano/Latinos,
six of them women and two of them men. Other institutions also granting eight
degrees included the University of Colorado at Boulder, Boston University,
Temple University and Oregon’s Western Seminary. Leading the list is the
University of Texas at Austin with 48 graduates. Also on the list are the
University of California at Berkeley and the University of California at Los
Angeles with 35 and 31 graduates respectively, and Yale and the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology with seven graduates each.
Steve Burkett, WSU Graduate School associate dean, says “for the past
several years WSU has aggressively recruited outstanding Chicano/Latino
and other students of color across all disciplines. It is extremely satisfying to
see positive results from efforts that began some time ago and to provide
concrete evidence supporting statements regarding our commitment to
diversity.”
He noted that, according to WSU Institutional Research, in the 1999 fall
semester there were 295 graduate students of color at WSU, including 89
Chicano/Latino students. The 89 students were 9.7 percent of WSU’s total
students of color graduate population that semester. By contrast in the 1994
fall semester — including students at WSU Vancouver, WSU Spokane and
WSU Tri-Cities — there were 128 graduate students of color at WSU, 43 of
whom were Chicano/Latino.
