Hulbert Receives WSU Alumni Achievement Award

PULLMAN, Wash. — Longtime agriculture leader Robert J. Hulbert of Mount
Vernon has received the Washington State University Alumni Achievement
Award. At a May 14 gathering of WSU Skagit Valley Alumni, Hulbert was
cited for “providing exceptional leadership to the agricultural industry; superb
service to his community; and 50 years of deep loyalty, pride and support to
his alma mater.”

The 1951 agricultural economics graduate is a member of a four-generation
WSU family. Following graduation, he and a brother, Jim, entered into a
farming partnership. The family now farms 1,200 acres of mixed horticultural
crops, including daffodil bulbs and flowers in the Skagit Valley.

Hulbert served as legislative chairman of the Washington State Farm Bureau
for many years. He also has held presidencies of the Western Washington
Horticultural Association, the Skagit County Farm Bureau, the Puget Sound
Seed Growers and the Skagit County Strawberry Growers.

The father of five WSU graduates is a past president of the WSU Parents
Association and 1987 WSU Dad of the Year. He served on the College of
Agriculture and Home Economics advisory board, and has been active in
lobbying efforts on behalf of WSU.

Hulbert was a founder of the Washington Agriculture and Forestry Leadership
Program at WSU in 1979. The program was designed to develop leadership and
public service skills of 30 participants annually.

James M. Hulbert Hall on the WSU campus is named for his father, a two-term
president of the Board of Regents between 1921 and 1932.
