WSU Pharmacist Earns Alumni Achievement Award

PULLMAN, Wash. — R. Keith Campbell, one of the country’s foremost
authorities on diabetes education, received the Washington State University
Alumni Achievement Award April 8 during the WSU College of Pharmacy
Week.

He was cited for bringing distinction to WSU through his teaching, scholarly
contributions and public service as a diabetes educator.

The professor and associate dean of the college of pharmacy has been a
member of the WSU faculty for 31 years. He came to Pullman from Spokane
and completed a degree in pharmacy in 1964, and a master’s degree in business
administration in 1972.

He started the university’s off-campus clinical pharmacy program that enables
students to observe physicians and clinical pharmacists in Spokane hospitals
and to work in community or hospital pharmacies.

His scholarly contributions include more than 500 publications. He also has
made some 600 presentations to students, patients and professionals on
“Understanding Medications and Their Use” and updates on the treatment of
diabetes.

Campbell’s forte is diabetes managed care. He also has developed a continuing
education program on diabetes, smoking cessation, heart disease, AIDS and
other topics that empowers health care providers throughout the United
States.

He is a consultant to six major pharmaceutical manufacturers and former host
of “Ask Your Pharmacist,” a national radio talk show. His professional
memberships include the American Diabetes Association board of directors
and the American Association of Diabetes Educators. He has served as a
trustee of the Diabetes Research and Education Foundation and on the
Diabetes Advisory Board of Pullman Memorial Hospital.

Campbell also has devoted countless hours as an adviser to the Pharmacy
Students Association, the Student Diabetes Association and WSU’s chapter
of Sigma Nu fraternity.

His WSU honors include the President’s Excellence Award for Public Service
and Dad of the Year. From the college of pharmacy, he has been named
Outstanding Alumnus, Adviser of the Year, and twice named Outstanding
Faculty Member. Peers in the Washington State Pharmaceutical Association
voted him Pharmacist of the Year, and he also was recognized as the
Outstanding Diabetes Educator in the United States.
