PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University’s Solstice Wind Quintet will perform an evening of classical music Oct. 19 in Bryan Hall Auditorium.
The 8 p.m. recital is open to the public without charge, and will feature the music of four composers.
The quintet will perform the “Wind Quintet, Op. 88, No. 2” by Anton Reicha; “Wooden Miniatures,” a 1994 piece by WSU School of Music and Theatre Arts faculty member Gregory Yasinitsky; and “Suite No. 2 for Wind Quintet” by Claude Debussy.
The quintet will end the recital with “Summer Music, Op. 31” by Samuel Barber. The final piece contains difficult intricate melodies and recurring themes, clarinetist James Schoepflin said. Unlike some other quintet pieces, “Summer Music” isn’t broken up into many parts. “It’s what we call ‘through’ music,” Schoepflin said. “So the piece ties together in the ear of the listener. And each player gets a big virtuoso solo.”
Quintet members are Ann Yasinitsky, flute; Gary Plowman, oboe; James Schoepflin, clarinet; Susan Hess, bassoon; and Roger Logan, horn.
Following this recital, the quintet will tour western Washington, presenting school concerts as representatives of the WSU music school. They will present formal evening concerts in Port Angeles and Seattle.
The quintet originated at WSU in the late 1970s.
