Search for Advancement Vice President Postponed

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University officials have decided to postpone the
search for a new vice president for university advancement so that the next WSU president can
be involved in hiring the new head of university fund-raising and alumni programs.
“WSU is searching for an outstanding individual for this position, and we know that
excellent candidates will want to meet with the new president,” WSU President Samuel Smith said
in announcing the delay. “It is appropriate to leave to my successor the decision on this
important university administrator.”
Smith announced late last month his plans to retire on July 1, 2000.
The president said the same committee, chaired by Barbara Couture, dean of WSU’s College
of Liberal Arts, will conduct the search. The committee includes board members from the WSU
Foundation and the WSU Alumni Association as well as faculty, staff and students. Individuals
from WSU’s four campus communities and the Puget Sound area were appointed.
The committee will search for a replacement for Connie Kravas, the long-time vice president
and president of the WSU Foundation, who left for a vice presidency at the University of
California, Riverside, starting this month.
