WSU Greeks Plan Community Party

PULLMAN, Wash. — A street on Greek row at Washington State University will be closed
to traffic for a community-wide festival. The event, on May 1, happens just before the one-year
anniversary of a street-party-turned-riot last spring.
Student leaders from the WSU Greek system formed a Social Planning Committee and
organized the party on California Street as an alternative to alcohol oriented events. Associated
Students of WSU and the Office of Student Affairs contributed financial assistance. Organizers
have invited the entire Pullman community for the festival.
Co-organizer Dave Otis, vice president of the Interfraternity Council, says the Social
Planning Committee decided to invite children and their parents so they could bring the
community into this event. “I feel it will help us develop an overall positive attitude,” says Otis.
“It will let kids and parents see that Greek row is really a pretty nice place; that the people who
live in Greek row are OK.”
From 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. there will be an emphasis on activities for children age 12 and under.
From 1-5 p.m. the event is open to college-age students and the community in general. Music,
face painting, inflatable street toys, game booths, a three-on-three basketball tournament and
other attractions are planned. Free hot dogs and soft drinks will be available.
Children and parents who attend the party will be given a bracelet good for free admission to
a WSU baseball game and a track meet taking place the same day.
