Northwest Philosophy Conference Set for WSU, UI Campuses

PULLMAN, Wash. — “Reason and Rationality” is the theme of the Inland Northwest
Philosophy Conference set for April 23-25 on the Washington State University and University of
Idaho campuses.
Friday sessions are set for the UI’s North Campus Center. An evening public forum is
planned at the Moscow Community Building. Several experts in various fields of study will
respond to the question, “How should we draw the line between the rational and the irrational?”
General discussion follows.
Conference organizers Joe Campbell, WSU, and Michael O’Rourke, UI, expect the public
forum will introduce non-philosophers to the particular methods of study used by philosophers.
“We hope this will give everyone a broader understanding of what philosophy is and why it is
important,” they said.
Saturday sessions will be held at WSU’s Todd Hall. Michael Bratman of Stanford University
will deliver the keynote address, “Reflection, Planning and Temporally Extended Agency,” at 5
p.m.
Sessions continue Sunday at the UI Student Union Building. The conference will close with
a workshop on mutual aid conducted by Brian Skyrms, professor of Philosophy at the University
of California-Irvine.
