PULLMAN, Wash. — Jan. 8 is the deadline for nominations for the 1999 Washington State University Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Distinguished Service Awards.
As part of the university’s 12th annual celebration honoring King, the WSU committee planning the event will present awards to outstanding undergraduate and graduate students, members of the faculty and staff, and community members, said Kathy Potter, WSU College of Veterinary Medicine faculty member and chair of the committee’s awards subcommittee.
Awards will be presented during the WSU Martin Luther King Jr. celebration program beginning at 7 p.m. Jan. 19 in the Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum.
“We invite nominations of those embracing and practicing the principles of umoja (unity), ujima (collective work and responsibility), nia (purpose) and kujichagulia (self-determination). Nominees should show their commitment to racial harmony, equality and equity for all,” Potter said.
Selection of award winners will be based on recipients showing some or all of the following attributes: manifested commitment to the ideals and principles of Martin Luther King Jr.; assisted WSU with advancing equality and equity throughout the university and community; worked with WSU Multicultural Student Services in implementing its vision and directions; provided mentoring to incoming and/or transfer students of color; and made significant contributions to the WSU, University of Idaho, Pullman and Moscow, Idaho, ethnic communities.
