Clothesline Project Begins on Terrell Mall

PULLMAN, Wash. — The Young Women’s Christian Association of Washington State University
will host its Clothesline Project on Glenn Terrell Mall from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. each day this week as part of
the “Week Without Violence” events.
The Clothesline Project is a visual display that bears witness to violence against women, sponsors
said. Painted T-shirts will hang from clotheslines on the mall. The shirts will display a moving and personal
tribute to women as victims and survivors of violence. Male survivors can submit shirts for display, too.
“It’s a great project,” said Lindsay M. Timarong, a volunteer for the project at WSU. “It gives people a
chance to express their experiences in a visual way.”
Colors will represent the different experiences women have witnessed or have been subjected to
themselves. White is for women who have died of violence; yellow or beige, for women who have been
battered or assaulted; red, pink or orange, for women who have been raped, sexually assaulted or sexually
harassed; blue or green, for women survivors of incest or child abuse; and purple or lavender, for women
attacked because of their sexual orientation.
“The colors are not mandatory and you need not be an artist to create a moving and personal tribute,”
said organizers for the YWCA.
The purpose of the project is to help with the healing process for people who have lost a loved one or
are survivors of violence, and to educate and inform others of the problem of violence against women. A
variety of informational materials will be available at the Compton Union Building Mall throughout the
week.
For those interested in painting a shirt, stop by the Women’s Resource Center, located in Wilson Hall,
Room 8, during office hours 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Questions can be directed to staff by calling 509/335-6849.
