PULLMAN, Wash. — San Francisco artist/author/activist Daphne Scholinski will speak at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, at Washington State University as part of the WSU Gay and Lesbian History Month celebration.
Scholinski will deliver her free public address in the Compton Union Building Auditorium.
She will talk about her book, “The Last Time I Wore a Dress,” which details, in a first-person narrative, her three years as a teenager in a mental hospital after being committed by her parents.
Salon magazine says the book “details the punishments — including physical assault, sexual abuse and institutionalization — visited upon young women who fail to live up to prevailing definitions of femininity.” According to USA Today, the book is “an indictment of a mental health profession that denied Scholinski both normal teen years and the help she did need — and continues to do the same thing to others.
National media attention for Scholinski, who was a speaker at the United Nations’ Fourth World Conference on Women in China in 1995, has come from ABC-TV’s 20/20, NBC-TV’s Dateline and Today, the Chicago Tribune and others, according to Melynda Huskey, director of the WSU Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Allies Program.
As part of her WSU visit, a free slide presentation of Scholinski’s artwork will be given at noon Tuesday, Oct. 6, in the Compton Union Building B 1-5.
