Cougfest ’98 Welcomes WSU New, Returning Students Sept. 18

PULLMAN, Wash. — Jumbalassy, a Seattle reggae band, headlines Cougfest ’98, the annual welcome-back festival for Washington State University new and returning students.
The event is set for 6 p.m.-midnight Friday, Sept. 18, on the Glenn Terrell Mall or, in case of inclement weather, in the Compton Union Building’s Matthew G. Carey Ballroom.
Sponsored by the Associated Students of WSU and WSU Athletics, Cougfest ’98 will include Seattle’s Goodness, a rock band touring with Pearl Jam; Tacoma’s Black Caesar, a hip-hop group; and The Five Fingers of Funk, called “Portland’s hardest working band in hip-hop.” Opening the evening will be a local band, Postal Joe. Comedian Floyd Phillips and a step show by fraternity members also will be part of the entertainment.
The program will include appearances by Cindy Fredrick, head coach of Cougar volleyball; Mike Price, Cougar football head coach; the WSU cheer squad; and the WSU Cougar Marching Band. On Sept. 18 and 20, the Cougs host respective Pac-10 volleyball opponents Arizona and Arizona State in Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum. In football, the Cougars play Palouse rival Idaho Sept. 19 at Martin Stadium.
A food fair, featuring cuisine from local restaurants, will also be part of Cougfest ’98.
A major event sponsor this year is The Bookie, along with local businesses and the ASWSU Entertainment Committee.
