WSU Tests Cashier Operation for Library Parking

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University Parking Services will begin staffing the Library Garage with a cashier at the Colorado Street entrance booth beginning Monday, May 11.
The cashier operation is being implemented on a trial basis to provide a higher level of service to the facility, according to John Shaheen, assistant director of public safety. The cashier’s booth will be occupied weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The operation will be reviewed at the end of the summer session.
The fee for parking in the Library Garage will remain $1 an hour. Currently, parking customers are required to put money in a numbered slot box located near the elevator lobbies. The slot boxes will remain, and customers will still need to use them during the “off” times, after 4 p.m. weekdays and on Saturday and Sunday, Shaheen said. An hourly fee is required in the Library Garage at all times.
The cashier operation is similar to the parking garage operations in urban areas, Shaheen said. Drivers take a ticket at the entrance booth, raising the entrance gate. Patrons present the tickets to the cashier upon exiting. The fee will be calculated by the fee computer, based on quarter-hour intervals.
“The main advantage to the cashier service is that the patron doesn’t need to predetermine the time of their stay. They have complete freedom to stay as long as they need to, then pay for whatever time they used when they leave,” Shaheen commented.
About 500-600 cars are parked in the Library Garage each day during the regular school year.
