Dear Editor:
The Interfraternity and Panhellenic Executive Boards at Washington State University would like to express their outrage, anger, and embarrassment regarding the riot on College Hill Saturday night and Sunday morning. Since its inception, we as councils have wholeheartedly agreed with the Greek system alcohol policy, knowing that de-emphasizing alcohol is one of the many steps needed for national fraternities and sororities, as well as universities, to take in order to save Greek organizations. We firmly believe that the students involved in the incident do not reflect the sentiments, mentality, or maturity level of the thousands of other Greek and non-Greek Washington State University students. The Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Councils will investigate the incident in order to determine if any Greek chapters organized or sponsored the event. We realize that the investigation and judicial process could take time, but we are resolute in seeing this through to a conclusion.
The Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils would like to thank our local law enforcement agencies for their response to this event. We have spent a number of years working closely with the Pullman police to enhance the relationship between students and law enforcement agencies. Although things were not perfect, the relationship had improved greatly over recent years. This horrible event will certainly have a negative impact on this relationship. We pledge to take all necessary steps to assist law enforcement in the investigation of this incident, and to begin the long process of rebuilding trust with Pullman Police.
As student leaders we are resolute on staying the course to make Washington State University an institution that fosters education, leadership, and friendship. For future and current alumni we vow to diligently work to restore the good name of Washington State University.
