PULLMAN, Wash. — Support from four companies and a member of the Washington State University Board of Regents is assisting the 1998 Black-Male Orientation to Leadership Development and the African American Women’s conferences at WSU.
Using the theme “Empowering Ourselves to Build Our Community,” the BOLD and AAW conferences for African American college and high school students will be held at WSU March 6-8. BOLD is in its sixth year, and AAW in its fifth.
According to Bennie Harris, BOLD executive director, State Farm Insurance is the major gift sponsor. The firm’s funding supports keynote speakers Jewel Diamond Taylor, a Los Angeles motivational speaker and counselor, and author Bertice Berry, San Diego, an award-winning lecturer, stand-up comedian and USA Live host. Eli Lilly and Co., Anheuser-Busch, Inc., and WSU Regent Kenneth Alhadeff of Seattle have contributed funds which support the appearances of other speakers at the conference.
In addition, said Harris, Horizon Airlines has contributed free airline round-trip transportation to bring Taylor, Berry and others to the conference.
“Our conferences very much appreciate the support of these companies and Mr. Alhadeff. The future of our states and nation depends on quality leaders. We feel BOLD and AAW play a role in preparing young people to face tomorrow’s challenges,” he said.
