PULLMAN, Wash. — Mary Lowe Good, former undersecretary for technology, U.S. Department of Commerce, will present the 1998 V.N. Bhatia Lecture on Excellence in Education Wednesday, March 4, on the Washington State University campus.
Good’s public lecture, “The Role of the University in the Global and Technological Environment of the 21st Century,” is set for 4 p.m. in Todd Hall, Room 276.
As undersecretary, Good oversaw the Office of Technology Policy, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the National Technical Information Service.
Good also coordinated the Clinton administration’s Partnership for a New Generation Vehicle (“clean car”) effort.
The 1997 recipient of the Priestly Medal of the American Chemical Society, Good is a former president of the ACS and has been the senior vice president of technology for Allied Signal Inc. She was a member of the National Science Board under the Carter and Reagan administrations. President Bush appointed her to the Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.
Good received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Central Arkansas and her master’s and doctorate in inorganic chemistry from the University of Arkansas. She is the managing member of Venture Capital Investors, Little Rock, Ark.
The lecture is presented annually to honor Bhatia, who directed the university’s Honors Program for 30 years until his retirement in 1993. Among his many honors was selection to the Knight of Dannebrog Order from the Queen of Denmark in 1991 for “contributions in education, culture and business.” It is sponsored by the University Honors Program, College of Sciences, Information Technology and the College of Education.
