PULLMAN, Wash.–In beautiful color photographs, a new centennial viewbook pays tribute to Washington State University–present and past. The 112-page book, commissioned by the WSU Alumni Association, came off the presses earlier this month.
“This book is a tribute to our school and the fond memories we share,” says Keith Lincoln, executive director of the alumni association. “In celebrating ‘A Century of Service,’ we reflect upon the loyalty, affection and dedication that alumni have for WSU.”
The alumni association enlisted the talents of award-winning photographer Phil Schofield of Bellingham. His assignment, he says, was “to capture the details of life at WSU and in doing so, to explore the spirit and essence of the institution.”
Beginning in the fall of 1996, Schofield visited the campus and the Pullman area, where he shot several thousand photographs. He submitted between 1,300 and 1,500 photographs to the publisher Harmony House of Louisville, Ky. Ninety of Schofield’s best photographs were chosen.
Also included in the book is a section of nearly 40 black and white historical photographs from the vast files in WSU Manuscripts and Archives. One of the earliest photos of the first campus building, known as “The Crib,” dates back to 1892, the year the school opened its doors.
Appropriately displayed on the book’s cover jacket is the familiar campus landmark–the Bryan Hall clock tower. The book also includes several sweeping aerial photographs of the Pullman campus and the vast rolling Palouse hills, athletic events, residence halls and the striking new Holland Library Addition.
The book, Lincoln says, is more than a collection of photographs of campus. “Woven together, they represent the hard work of students, the patience and dynamics of faculty, and the achievements of alumni.”
Harmony House has produced more than 200 campus viewbooks for colleges and universities in the past 17 years.
