PULLMAN, Wash.–Joe Spoonemore, director of special projects for facilities management at Washington State University, is the new president-elect of the international Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers.
He was installed at the organization’s annual educational conference earlier this month in Orlando, Fla., and will become president of the association next year. One of his first official duties will be to address the group’s Australasian Region conference in Sydney, Australia, in September.
The association, formerly the Association of Physical Plant Administrators (APPA), has 4,800 members and representatives of 23 nations. Its purpose is “to support educational excellence through quality programming, leadership and professional facilities management.”
Spoonemore has been WSU’s member representative to APPA since 1984. He has held several association offices, including regional president, and has been an author and consultant on the organization’s Facilities Management Manual. He also has served as a member of the Facilities Management Evaluation Team.
Earning a bachelor’s degree in engineering and a master’s in business from WSU, Spoonemore, a registered professional engineer, worked in the private sector before joining the physical plant staff in 1974. He was appointed director of the physical plant in 1984 and named special projects director July 1. He is a member of the Pullman Chamber of Commerce, chairing its Government Affairs Committee, and is a past president of the Pullman Kiwanis and the Society of Professional Engineers.
