Washington State University juniors Grace Carpenter and Reed Scott received 60% percent of the vote to become the next student body president and vice president.
The Associated Students of Washington State University (ASWSU) held its annual election March 10–12 with over 2,700 students casting a vote. That total number, equaling 21% of all eligible voters, bested last year’s turnout of just under 5%.
The pair’s victory over Collin Bannister and Emily Bell capped the first contested ASWSU election in three years.
Carpenter and Scott seek to increase student involvement opportunities, strengthen what it means to be a Coug, and ensure students not only have access to resources, but know about and can use them.
The Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA) also completed its election with Bronwyn Valentine and Shae Ortega winning the presidency and vice presidency in an uncontested race. A total of 279 votes were cast, equaling 15% of eligible voters.
Among Valentine’s and Ortega’s priorities for next year are to foster unity, bridge divides with other organizations, and be strong advocates for student security and global justice.
