Money in Elections: What Montana can tell us about Citizens United
In 2012, more than $50 million was poured into Montana’s Senate race, from outside corporate and labor union organizations, courtesy of the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United. David Parker had access to both campaigns and tracked the spending of outside groups. He will discuss how the massive spending of outside groups under the Citizens United decision has altered campaigning in the United States.
David Parker is an associate professor of political science at Montana State University. He frequently provides media commentary for local, state, and national news outlets. Dr. Parker has authored The Power of Money in Congressional Campaigns, 1880-2006, as well as articles on the consequences of divided government and how members of Congress employ their office expenditures to build reputations with constituents. His book on the 2012 Montana Senate election between Senator Jon Tester and Congressman Denny Rehberg, Battle for the Big Sky: Campaigning, Representation, and Home Styles in the U.S. Congress, is set to be published this fall.
