The WSU Center for Civic Engagement Celebrates Student Engagement during Civic Engagement Week

The WSU Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) celebrates Civic Engagement Week April 20-26 as a record number of over 8,000 students have engaged this academic year! The week includes service projects, educational tabling, an Eco Adventure, a Public Forum Debate on environmental sustainability, and the LEAD event featuring the President’s Award for Leadership.

All week long, in celebration of both Civic Engagement Week and Earth Day, the CCE will hold a number of service projects throughout the Palouse. Students can sign up for the daily projects on CougSync under “Service Opportunities”. Find projects that provide free transportation from campus and back by searching for “CCE Transportation Provided” in the service module’s search feature. One special project taking place on Sunday, April 20, is a daylong Eco Adventure to Granite Point. Participants will enjoy kayaking and helping to beautify the area for only $15! Register by Tuesday, April 15, to participate.

From Monday through Friday, the CCE will hold an information table on the CUB first floor from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily. Learn how you can get involved, win prizes and enter a grand prize drawing of a refurbished bicycle from Palouse Bicycle Collective! Win a prize at the table by liking us on Facebook or following us on Twitter or Instagram. Enter into the grand prize drawing by sharing how you’ve been civically engaged on Facebook or Twitter or posting a Service Selfie on Instagram! Be sure to tag @WSUCCE in your post to be entered. Grand prizes can only be won by current WSU students who are not employed by the CCE.

On Earth Day, Tuesday, April 22, the CCE will hold a table at the campus-wide Earth Day Fair on the Glenn Terrell Mall 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Stop by to check out all the great stands and grab some fun giveaways! The CCE will also hold a reception for environmentalist Emily Hunter at 11 a.m. in the CUB Junior Ballroom followed by a Public Forum Debate featuring Hunter at noon. Student Involvement will host a keynote address by Emily Hunter on Monday, April 21, at 7 p.m. in the CUB Auditorium.

The highlight of the week is the 2014 Leadership and Engagement Awards of Distinction (LEAD) event on Thursday, April 24, at 5 p.m. This event is a celebration of WSU student leaders and those who have mentored and supported the efforts of these students as they work towards leadership and social change. The LEAD program will include the inauguration of the 2014-15 ASWSU officers, a Gallery of Leadership, and the presentation of the 2013 President’s Award for Leadership featuring WSU Provost Dr. Daniel Bernardo. The LEAD event is open to the public and will take place in the CUB Senior Ballroom.

We hope you’ll join us to celebrate student engagement at WSU during the 2014 Civic Engagement Week. For more information and to register for events, please visit cce.wsu.edu.
