In March, WSU Provost and Executive Vice President Daniel J. Bernardo selected the book Garbology, by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edward Humes, as the 2014-15 Common Reading book. It’s about trash and the impact it has on the environment and more, and about the far-ranging consequences of our consumption-driven society.
As faculty in Pullman plan their fall and spring courses, Dr. Bernardo suggests considering if the book, or topics from it, could enrich students’ learning experiences.
The Provost wrote, “I urge colleges and departments to think about activities, lectures, forums, and opportunities to engage their freshman students with this Common Reading book.” His complete letter about the Common Reading selection is available on the website at CommonReading.wsu.edu.
Pullman faculty who would like a desk copy of Garbology as they plan courses and programs can submit a request to Common Reading Co-Director Karen Weathermon at kweathermon@wsu.edu.
An exciting fall lineup is coming together of expert speakers, events, and interdepartmental collaborative projects centered on trash at WSU, she says.
