Important Firewall Maintenance Notification

ITS is upgrading university data border firewalls Tuesday morning Nov. 21 from 4:30 to 6 a.m., resulting in brief gaps in internet connectivity during that maintenance window.

Because this is a major upgrade, please take time to evaluate all impacted resources to ensure service continuity and avoid any resulting performance issues.

Some areas of concern include:

  1. Persistent connections such as video or VPNs may need to be restarted after the upgrade is complete. This may also involve clearing the process on the firewall if they cannot be restarted.
  2. SSL connections to or from the internet and using non-standard ports may need firewall rules to permit the traffic if no rules currently exist. Standard ports include 443 (https), 465, 989, 990, 992, 993, 995.
  3. Traffic before the upgrade that no longer works following the firewall changes may also need to be evaluated to ensure proper permissions are still in place for moving across the firewall.

The upgrade team anticipates only minor performance concerns or adjustments as part of this change. However, if you do have any questions related to this upgrade, please call or email CougTech (@wsu.edu) 335-4357.
