Check out the beach at the Tech Test Kitchen

“Where am I?” asked WSU journalism Professor Carolyn Robinson. She adjusted the Google Cardboard headset. “I’m on a beach.”

Virtual beaches were one of half a dozen attractions at yesterday’s Tech Test Kitchen open house in the AMS offices at Holland 150. Visitors also explored 3-D printers, lecture capture, quick-response systems, video editing, and augmented reality software.

Robinson, a former producer for CNN and Aljazeera, said Google Cardboard could be useful in her international reporting class. “It would be really nice to talk about someplace in the world, then virtually go there,” she said.

Robinson also arranged for a real-life visit. After a brief discussion of video editing, Ruth Gregory, an emerging technology expert at WSU Global Campus, agreed to give presentations to two of Robinson’s classes today.

“Helping faculty integrate technology into their classes is what the Technology Test Kitchen is all about,” Gregory said. “I’m excited.”

The last open house is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today in the AMS offices at Holland 150. Starting next week, the Test Kitchen will focus on different educational technologies each week. Those sessions run through May 1, and include workshops and open labs. More information is at elearning.wsu.edu/techtest. No registration is required.
