WSU Transportation Services is happy to announce the addition of bike lanes and shared-use lane arrows (sharrows) on some streets on the WSU campus. This is an important project to increase the safety for bicyclists on the WSU campus, as well as to bring awareness to motorists of bicyclists riding on campus.
The streets with the new and improved bicycle infrastructure include Stadium Way, Grimes Way, Spokane St., Campus St., Thatuna St., Cougar Way, and Wilson Rd.
With the changes taking place, bicyclists and motorists alike may not be familiar with Washington State laws regarding bike lanes, shared-use lanes, and other related rules and laws. If you are not familiar with them, please review these Washington State bicycle laws for both vehicle drivers and bicyclists.
Also feel free to stop in the Transportation Services building where we have pocket Washington State Bicycle Law guides from the Washington State Department of Transportation, as well as a guide for everyday bicycling presented by the Cascade Bike Club.
Shared-use lanes may cause some confusion for bicyclists and motorists who have not experienced them before. On that note, one very important law to remember is that while riding on a roadway, a bicyclist has all the rights and responsibilities of a vehicle driver.
With these new changes taking place, we ask that vehicle drivers and bicyclists both make an effort to coexist with one another on the roadway, watch out for your fellow Cougs, and practice patience and understanding for the unique challenges one another face when sharing the same streets.
