Claire Metelits studies insurgent groups and tries to figure out why they kill civilians.

Moreover, to better understand what motivates and influences these individuals, the WSU assistant professor of political science goes out into the field, sneaking across borders, visiting rebel camps and “hanging out” with the insurgents themselves.

Metelits has sipped tea with the Taliban, interviewed FARC guerrillas in Colombia, spent time with revolutionary soldiers in southern Sudan and shared meals with Kurdish separatists in northern Iraq.
