Sport Management Coordinator Gets National Recognition

PULLMAN, Wash.—Cathryn Claussen, coordinator of Washington State University’s Sport Management Program and co-author of a new sport management textbook, will be recognized for her professional contributions on March 2 by the Sport and Recreation Law Association (SLRA). She will be presented with the association’s Honor Award at the 20th Annual Conference on Sport, Physical Activity, Recreation and Law, held in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Claussen graduated from Georgetown University Law Center in 1992, the year she began her involvement with SLRA.  Her contributions have included holding four offices, including president; chairing committees, and serving on the editorial board of the Journal of Legal Aspects of Sport.

“In each of these roles, Cathy used her unique skills, intellect, and good nature to make a substantial impact on our organization,” said Stacey Altman of East Carolina University, chair of the awards committee.

Claussen joined the WSU faculty in 2000. Her scholarly publications include a new co-authored textbook, “Sport Law: A Managerial Approach;” three chapters in each edition of the Law for Recreation and Sport Managers textbook; and numerous journal articles. Her research is focused primarily in the areas of constitutional and civil rights in the context of sport.

“Our students are fortunate to have someone with Cathy’s national stature, commitment and enthusiasm to the field of sport and law,” said Phyllis Erdman, chair of WSU’s Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling Psychology. “We are very proud of her.”
